Home care workers support people in the community to remain independent in their own homes. They travel between the houses of the people they look after, and often this can work flexibly around their other responsibilities. Many home care providers manage their shifts to fit around their care workers’ personal commitments such as school runs, study time or appointments.
Home care provides a lot of opportunities for career progression and gaining qualifications. Whether you want to specialise in a particular area (dementia care, end of life, learning disabilities…) or see yourself as a manager or nurse, home care is a great place to start. The role of a home care worker is so varied, no two days are the same. Home care workers visit the people they look after in their own homes and help them with all aspects of daily life so that they can remain independent and safe. This could include shopping, taking medication, cooking, personal care or simply helping them to move around.
Home care workers also liaise with professionals from other health and care teams to make sure the people they look after have access to the most appropriate care. More experienced home care workers with specialist skills in certain areas, may choose to take on additional responsibilities such as developing policies and procedures within their organisation.
